HAVE FAITH IN GEORGE MICHAEL
When the duo of Wham!—George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley—parted ways in 1986, a million and one hearts broke over the group’s (somewhat amicable) split. Fans the world over wondered if it would be the end of seeing their favorite stars perform again. While Ridgeley resumed a career (hobby?) in race car driving in Europe, George Michael stayed true to his craft: songwriting, singing and performing. As evidenced by Michael’s first solo LP since his Wham! days, Faith is proving to be a monstrous hit for him! Singles like “I Want Your Sex” and “Faith” are establishing Michael as a successful solo artist—possibly even bigger than Wham! Could it be possible? Apparently so! The question of where George Michael’s music career would go is no longer unanswered.
Wham! combined pop, dance music and energy with their worldwide hits “Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go),’’ “Careless Whisper,” “Everything She Wants” and “Edge Of Heaven,” from their three albums, Wham!, Make It Big and Edge Of Heaven. And while George Michael has kept the same energy and dance spirit in his new recordings, he’s definitely brought his own style to the solo work. The result is the smash Faith album. Michael also brought some controversy to his new solo music. “I Want Your Sex” was banned from many radio stations and MTV wanted to edit the video for the single, in which his girlfriend, Kathy Jeung, is featured. Even so, “I Want Your Sex” soared to #2 on the charts and proved that George Michael is as good as gold.
If fans are still wondering whether Michael is going to remove himself from the music business, they needn’t worry. George Michael is back with his new successful solo LP and it looks as if the former Whamler is here to stay—doing it his own way!
