YAMAHA APX ACOUSTICELECTRIC GUITARS

The APX acoustic series is special because it represents a leap forward in terms of electric/acoustic instruments. The system consists of one APX sensor located in the body of the instrument which captures the “woody,” natural sound of an acoustic. Another sensor, with a hexaphonic pick-up, is located in the bridge to transmit the highs. The APX guitars come in a wide array of styles: highlighting the line are five stereo models which use a stereo bridge pick-up and a built-in FET + 1C pre-amp. When combined with the mix control that blends the body pick-up with the bridge pick-up (standard on all models), the guitarist has extensive control over the axe’s imaging in the stereo sound field. Available in six and 12-string and classical models. For further information, contact the Yamaha Music Corporation, P.O. Box 6600, Buena Park, CA 90622-6600 (714/522-9011).

TRACE ELLIOT C500 COMBO

One of the best kept secrets in Ml is Trace Elliot Amps. Well-known in the U.K. and Europe as one of the finest quality amps available, we’ve been seeing TE’s on concert stages more frequently in America. In combining the company’s GP11 preamplifier with four extra heavy duty 10” speakers (each handling a potent 200 watts) it is not only one of the most powerful bass amps on the scene, it may be the smallest in relation to its output. The roadies of the world can let out a collective sigh of relief! The Trace Elliot C500 enclosure will supply, develop, handle and maintain an earsplitting 500 watts and never blow its top because it contains a fan-cooled power unit. STEPP DGX

The DG1 broke conceptual ground last year as a stand-alone synthesizer complete with digital/analog capability. The new DGX is a pure MIDI controller, in answer to requests from musicians for an inexpensive guitar controller with the same playability as the DG-1. The DGX also incorporates the same patented SCI (Semi Conductive Intelligent) frets developed for the earlier model. Basically, the result is true-touch sensitivity; there is no split second delay as occurs in the more traditional “pitch to voltage” systems. All the DGX’s real-time performance controls are MIDI assignable. The DGX will also store chords, select tunings, programs and MIDI channels for each string.

FOSTEX X-30

Fostex Corporation has announced that the suggested retail price of their X-30 Multitracker has been reduced to $499. The unit is the company’s third generation of cassette/mixers designed specifically for the beginning recordist.

“One of the key lessons we’ve learned over the last five years,’’ according to Fostex VP Mark Cohen, “is that many musicians have little interest in the recording process itself. They simply want to make good sounding recordings of their music as painlessly as possible.”

The unit’s controls are designed so that the user knows at a glance what the sta-' tus of each position is. This interesting angle of operation makes it easier to learn the functions and beginning process of recording. The unit also features Dolby B and C noise reduction, a 4x2 dedicated sub-mixer for overdubbing and bouncing tracks and a “rehearsal/take” function with the optional Remote Foot Control.
