PROFILE: The world got its first glimpse of Sting when he fronted a little English trio called the Police. After that band split up in 1983 (following the release of Synchronicity, their biggest album to date), Sting set off on his own, introducing a tasty new style of jazz rock and pursuing an acting career.

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Sting plays Kathleen Turner’s lover in Julia And Julia, a new mystery movie. Coming this year is Stormy Monday starring Sting and Melanie Griffith.

WHAT’S IN A NAME: Sting was born Gordon Matthew Sumner.

FORMER OCCUPATION: Before joining the Police in the late '70s, Sting was a school teacher in England.

PET PROJECT: In 1986 Sting did a series of live shows with acts like U2 and Peter Gabriel to support Amnesty International, an organization dedicated to helping political prisoners and their families. Despite his hectic schedule, he plans to do more shows this year to assist Amnesty.

QUOTE: "Movie stars have a hard time being believed. It’s almost as difficult as rock stars being believed. So l have to dance very carefully between these two fields if I want to do them both well, and I really have to keep people guessing.'
