PROFILE: These speedmetal goofs were the first underground band of their ilk to be snatched up by a major label...and with mind-crunching, earblasting LPs like Master Of Puppets, the world will never be the same. Formed by Danish-born drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/singer/beer drinker James Hetfield, Metallica is rounded out by guitarwhiz Kirk Hammett and bassist Jason “Newkid” Newsted (formerly of Flotsam & Jetsam).
HOME: The band gathered in L.A. then moved to the East Bay of San Francisco where they recorded Re-Revisited in their two-car garage.
DISCOGRAPHY: Kill ’Em All (’83), Ride The Lightning (’84), Master Of Puppets (’86), The $5.98 EP: Garage Days ReRevisited (’87).
GREATEST TRAGEDY: September 27,1986 in Scandinavia when the band’s tour bus crashed, instantly killing original bassist Cliff Burton.
HOBBIES: Vegetarian Kirk collects toys, Lars plays tennis and James collects broken arms (a result of his skateboarding obsession).
QUOTE: “I can sum up Metallica in six words: We’re about doing our own thing!
