Last of the Big-Time Fuck Ups
THE RED VELVET BALOON
Turns out avoiding the 27 club was a good thing.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s first time in Paris was way back in 2008 A.D. (after Dig!) when we played at the Bataclan, a concert hall dating back to the 1800s that in 1970 had been converted over to the rock ’n’ roll persuasion (also, incidentally, the year I was born). Two years later, it became the site of the ’72 Velvet Underground reunion show one-off, when Lou Reed, Nico, and John Cale reconvened for the first and last time since the band’s dissolving.
Weirdly, at least to me, right before that tour I’d bought the newly released first-ever official vinyl issue of that live performance and as a result had been making repeated trips into the also-resurfaced YouTube footage of it in all its grainy, blown-out black-and white otherworldliness. Now I was going to enter that world (at least in my own head), and as my stage marker would be at center Lou Reed position, I had fully loaded fantasy guns a-blazin’.
