Like many of us here at CREEM, Jay Brown—a.k.a. J Fotoman— became a great artist and photographer by first being a total degenerate. As a student at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Brown’s descent into (mild) depravity began as most do, with the first taste of freedom at university. “I went in as an engineering student, but immediately as soon as I got there, I started hanging out with all the artists and musicians,” chuckles Brown. “That is a really, really bad mix. We were having finals at 8 o’clock in the morning, and I was rolling in at 5 a.m. from hanging out with drama students.”
