THE BEASTIE BOYS

Yo! The Beastie Boys have become an American institution! They’ve stolen the hearts (or libidos) of teens throughout the country. They’ve had a number one record—and who’d have ever thunk it?

The Beasties started out during the era of punk as just another hardcore band from the streets of Brooklyn, New York. MCA (real name: Adam Yauch), Mike D. (Michael Diamond) and Adrock (Adam Horvitz) hit on a winning formula, however, when they recorded a punk rap single entitled “Cookie Puss.” The single—either by accident or by designwon them some notoriety, and an opening slot on Madonna’s super tour of two years ago didn’t hurt matters any. Still, everyone pretty much viewed the Beasties as nothing more than a novelty act. Little did anyone know, probably least of all the Boys themselves, that soon they’d be as big an act as Madonna herself!

Well, it happened with their recent debut LP on Def Jam, Licensed To III. Producer Rick Rubin got the boys in the studio, and together they merged the black street rhythms of rap (popularized by groups like Run-DMC who are pals with the Beasties) with the hard strains of heavy metal (the Boys cite Led Zeppelin as one of their main influences). And with the hit single status of “Fight For Your Right (To Party)”—and the MTV exposure that came with it—there was no stopping these guys! They’ve sold out auditoriums from Miami to Honolulu, and they should soon be the stars of their own feature-length movie!

Loud, rude, obnoxious and rebellious, America has taken the Beastie Boys to heart. Apparently, they must be doing something right!
