POISON
It was four years ago, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that Rikki Rocket, Bobby Dall and Bret Michaels formed the nucleus of what would be one of the most astonishing success stories of 1987: Poison.
After adding a talented New York guitarist-none other than C.C. DeVille-the guys headed out to Los Angeles, where fame and fortune would be theirs. Signing a record deal with an independent label, Enigma, Look What The Cat Dragged In (recorded in a mere 12 days) sold an incredible 200,000 copies the first week it was out. (Although few know it, Poison actually had another independent album prior to Cat, now an incredibly rare collector's item.)
Poison's success, it would seem, comes from doing things their own way. "I don't think Poison would have been accepted if we had listened to everybody else," says singer/frontman Michaels. "See, we've always done what we wanted to do. We decided that if we did exactly what we wanted to do all along, then eventually our styles and personalities and our music would be recognized for what they are."
And so they have-Cat has since gone platinum, and a summer of touring has kept Poison's profile high. "I honestly think Poison is going to be one of the most successful bands in rock 'n' roll history," Michael says. Who can doubt him?
