However, it was AC/DC s 1979 album Highway To Hell (produced by Mutt Lange) that broke the band in America. It was their first platinum seller and looked to make the band a non-stop touring machine until February of 1980, when lead singer Bon Scott choked on his own vomit after an allnight drinking binge. Following a period of rethinking and regrouping, AC/DC announced their plans to continue with new vocalist Brian Johnson. Their first album with the new line-up, Back In Black, remained in the U.S. Top 10 for five months, selling over five million in America alone. With interest in the band running at a new feverish pitch, AC/DC’s entire catalog hit either gold or platinum by the middle of the year. Even their earliest albums became revitalized bestsellers. Following extensive touring to support For Those About To Rock, We Salute You, the band took a long overdue break in 1982, waiting an entire year before releasing Flick Of The Switch, with a new drummer Simon Wright, a 20-year-old native of Manchester, England. 1985 saw AC/DC at the massive Rock In Rio festival with a new studio album, Fly On The Wall. Since then, the band’s hot selling Who Made Who, a combo LP featuring old and new tracks has kept them in videos, concerts and even on the radio—no easy feat for an Aussie metal band.
