THE CRUCH KWIK KWOTES!
The Church are one of Australia’s finest rock bands. Formed six years ago, the band has produced numerous records, although their success in America has been minimal. This may be changing, however, with the release of the band’s most recent LP, Heyday, their first record to hit Billboard’s Top 100. Two recent successful American tours (the first with Echo & The Bunnymen and the second on their own) didn’t hurt matters any, either. ROCK-SHOTS recently had the pleasure of speaking to the Church’s lead theologian, singer and bass player, Steve Kilbey, in Detroit.
“I guess we sort of bring the ‘psychedelic’ tag upon ourselves. The paisley shirts on the Heyday cover are really supposed to be kind of an irony. All I can say is that the next album definitely won’t be ‘psychedelic. ’ There won’t be any way that people will be making that association with us anymore. ”
“We’ve basically taken all the bands we were influenced by and mixed them all together. I mean, right at the beginning, anyone who plays the guitar and
sings is influenced by the Beatles. Anyone who i lyrics is influenced by Bob Dylan somewhere« the line. We liked all the great 'psychedelic bariM like Mott The Hoople, T. Rex and all the good ‘gl bands. And we liked all the good new wave bands! then you take a bit of this and a bit of that, mi\ just mix it all up. ”
“There seems to be a very small group ofCH diehards in America. I think the people who ge¶ us and realize there’s nobody else into it, theyi like that. ”
“I think there’s good bits on all of our recork well as bad things. But I’d say Heyday is prd our best record. ”
“There’s talk of releasing some of our efl albums as a cheap double package in AD Which I’d love to see happen. People would lx§ to get those albums cheap, but they obviously f do it unless we sell a lot of copies of our album. ”
