GRADUATION OF THE DREAM ACADEMY

"Life In A Northern Town" was such a great song, it could’ve only been sung by a band as cool as the Dream Academy! That’s not just how ROCK-SHOTS feels, that’s how a whole bunch of people feel—and it’s that same bunch of people that have made the Dream Academy’s debut album of the year’s hottest new records!

Who are the Dream Academy? Three people, actually, with a lot more tossed in for live performances and recording purposes. Nick Laird-Clowes is the “bigshot,” if you will, as he’s the lead singer and songwriter in the band. Nick’s not exactly a newcomer to the music business, either. As those in the know fully realize, Nick first appeared in a band called Alfalpha—an English trio that released a nifty, folkish LP on England's EMI label, during the heyday of “punk rock.” And after that? He was leader of a band called the Act—who released an album here in the States called Too Late At Twenty, which was a pop-rockin’ showcase in the first degree. Despite all these records, Nick looks as young as you or me, though—so good for him\

Other members of the Dream Academy include keyboardist Gilbert Gabriel and Kate St. John on various reed instruments. They’ve been together with Nick now for a few years, and ROCK-SHOTS will tell you straight: it sounds it! Because the Academy are one hot-sounding band\

Will the Dream Academy have another hit as big as “Life In A Northern Town”? Who can say for sure? We thought “The Love Parade” was just as groovy a tune; how about you? And you may not realize this, but there’s still another Dream Academy single that may wing its way toward America. That song is a cover version of the Smiths’ wonderful “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want”—and it’s a doozyl

Make predictions all you will, but be aware of this: we’ll be hearing more of England's Dream Academy throughout this decade and the next! Don’t believe us? Just wait a few years!
