PSYCHEDELIC FURS KWIK KWOTES!

The Psychedelic Furs have been providing the world with their unique brand of music and imagery since the heyday of British punk. The band merged the “punk” influences of the time with music from the “glitter” rock era (Bowie, Roxy Music, etc.) and ’60s psychedelic sounds— taking their name to offend stubborn, dogmatic punks who wouldn’t admit they like anything from the ’60s.

Ironically, after four criticallyacclaimed albums, the Furs are enjoying their biggest success with the movie Pretty In Pink. Director John Hughes took the title from the first cut on the Furs’ second LP, Talk Talk, the band re-recorded the song for the film soundtrack, and the rest is history. What follows are some quotes head Fur Richard Butler gave to ROCK-SHOTS about the “meaning” of the Psychedelic Furs.

“The whole point of being onstage is posing. You’re not there to look like you just walked off the dole line or something. You’re there to pose— to get something across. I think Iggy Pop was a poser. Mick Jagger. David Bowie. Lou Reed.

All posers. ”

“I think I’m an idealist—and that’s where the sarcasm, the irony and the bitterness come from: from me being disillusioned by certain ideas to a

degree. You know what could be happening, \ people have been saying it should be happenii for so long, but then you don’t see it happen

“When we first started, we were pretty m musically. It was just the ideas we had that carried us through more than anything. Ani we’ve sort of developed the musical aspects as

“I think ‘psychedelic’ is anything that your head up a bit. I have this way of WRITIJ| words where if you string certain words tog it doesn’t necessarily make a proper sente it gives you a definite feeling. ”

“What I’m optimistic about is people thin, their own way—making their own mind up things. And that’s the basic message. That’s the Psychedelic Furs are all about—trying encourage people to think for themselves. TM why I don’t write lyrics that are obvious.

“If you love music and live for music, then certainly you have to leave yourself open to those influences, the whole spectrum—the the clothes, the lifestyle—everything. And th pull all that together and something’s going come out that’s your own interpretation, a strong enough person. ”
