PROFILE: Lead singer and Jim Morrison (with a smashed face) lookalike Ian Astbury formed the Southern Death Cult in 1981 before teaming up with guitarist Billy Duffy to form the Death Cult, which they soon shortened to the Cult, merging elements of ’60s psychedelia, post-punk and heavy metal to score big success with their first major label LP, Love, and single, “She Sells Sanctuary.”
