HOWARD JONES: KWIK KWOTES!
Would you believe this guy once worked in a Saran Wrap factory? It’s true! “I was making it from big rolls into smaller rolls, so you could put them inside the packs and all,” he told us at ROCK-SHOTS. Boy, you’d think there’d be a song in there somewhere.
Ah, well—since those salad days, Howard Jones has developed into one of Britain’s hottest songwriters...and a pretty fast fellow with an opinion, too. Here’s a sample of what Howard thinks of just about everything!
“The first two tours I worked very hard because I did them as a oneman band—and it’s like coming to win over each person in the audience individually. It’s been a nice build to start with very small clubs, then come back with the Eurythmics ’ tour, then come back once more. ”
“I don’t consider myself to be a poet or anything like that. ”
“When I was young, we were always moving every 18 months. My father always just wanted to move. He was never happy in one place. ”
“As time went by, I realized there are so many taboos that are spread by our educational system that actually limit people. ”
“I wouldn’t say I’m well-read. I mean, the last book I read was Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. ”
“What I try and be is myself. I don’t try to be what I’m supposed to be or what people think I’m supposed to be. I just try to be Howard Jones. ”
“I never feel a sense of revenge. ”
“I don’t like people being macho, I don’t like people being disrespectful to women—I don’t like people being disrespectful to anyone—I don’t like people being bigots and I don’t like people pushing weaker people around. ”
“I like America. The warmth of the audience and the energy coming back from the audience has been really encouraging.”
“I don’t want to burden people with the chips on my shoulder. I want to offer something that is going to lift people up, not tend to drag them down. ”
“God can be anything you like. It could be a heavenly father, it could be a guy sitting on a throne with a beard or it could be the sum total of everything. Which is the one that I like.”
