Plans to bring the Eagles LP, Desperado, to the screen are on again, with shooting to start later this year. Assisting in the Warner Bros, production is the group's manager, Irving Azoff, with the screenplay by Steve Forman. And if all goes well, a second Eagles vehicle, Hotel California, will go celluloid . . . Hubba-hubba! Move over, Bedford, and tell Al Pacino the news: Movieland may have a new heartthrob, if Bruce Springsteen decides to take his Darkness On The Edge Of Town LP to the screen, with himself in the leading role.
Looks like the dreaded summer rerun season will sail right into next year, since Saturday Night Live producer. Lome Michaels and the Not Ready For Prime Time Players may call it a day. But that's OK for you, since the best and thb outrageous of the crew will be popping up on stage and screen before long: The Blues Brothers will come to life via a screenplay penned by Dan Aykroyd, who's starring along with big bro John Belushi. The long-awajted musical on Joliet Jake and Elwood, directed by John (Animal House) Landis, begins shooting this month for release next summer. Also on the horizon is Garrett Morris starring in The Al Jolson Story, coming to Broadway later this year.
He oughta be in pictures.. . Paul McCartney's getting into the (movie) act, using his Band On The Bun LP as the theme. The screenplay's by Willy Russell, and production is set to begin later this year. The film will feature the band in dramatic roles ... that includes Macca's Linda (maybe he'll retitle it to Man On The Run, if the laidy's acting is as good as her keyboarding!). Meanwhile, Paul's star-studded session at London's Abbey Road studios a few months back (which included Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and John Bonham and Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour), filmed for his own private use, may turn out ot be a TV special for air this summer.
Apparently taking her new task seriously, Bette Midler reportedly nixed $8 mil's worth of tours to concentrate on her.. .uh.. .acting career, which includes a remake of Gypsy (with Mz. M in the role Roz Russell made famous, and Pretty Baby Brooke Shields as the famous stripper), retitled Mama Rose.
Rumors ha vepaired Babs Streisand and Neil Diamond together again, this time for the screen. But that's the good news. The bad news is that the Bee Gees may compose a few ditties for the film. (Altogether now: helllppp meeee. . .) Keep an eye in the sky for a young British punk rocker/actress named Toyah Wilcox. If you didn't catch her in the NBC presentation of The Corn Is Green (starring Katherine Hepburn), watch for her in Kendo n Films' adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, due for release late this summer. The lady is hot.
Former Band member Levon Helm will portray Loretta Lynn's father in the upcoming Universal pic, Coal Miner's Daughter, based on the country singer's autobiography. Another bio in the works is No One Gets Out Alive, based on the life of the late Jim Morrison, co-authored by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugarman. Neck-in-neck are warblers Linda Ronstadt and Tanya Tucker, said to be the top choices for the lead in Honeysuckle Rose, a movie musical co-starring that country dude Willie Nelson.
As if once was not enough! Olivia Newton-John recently negotiated a movie deal with MCA/Universal... And to make matters interesting, it's rumored that the little Aussie will co-star in an upcoming film (produced by Allan Carr) with, believe it or not, the Village People. Those young devils, meanwhile, so inspired the U .S. Navy with their current hit, "In The Navy," they were invited aboard a nuclear missle ship to do it on film. The results will be used for recruiting all those Young Men!
The long arm of the law finally caught up with rebel-rouser Jerry Lee Lewis by relieving him of two antique Fords, 10 motorcycles, a Rolls'Royce, several Cadillacs, and two tractors. Jerry's back taxes amounted to $168,000, and oncepaicfup, the goods were returned. The IRS is mightier than the sword ... 'Til next month, itemize it or disguise it!
