Cuisine

THE BIJOU, 30855 Southfield Rd., Southfield:: All the romance of Paris flavored with Midwest corn. Food: excellent, buttres expensive.

THE CUM SHOP, 3077 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit:: Ensconced in a new home, under new management, this just isn't the legendary seafood house of old...

THECRACKED CRAB, 112W. Washington, Ann Arbor:: The Crab is a hole-in-the-wall seafood joint in the long-on-good-eats-short-onatmosphere East Coast seafood house tradition. Despite terrific crowds the Crab has resisted the temptation to expand and overextend itself. The beer batter shrimp's a must. Prices reasonable, crowds on weekends unreasonable.

DOUG'S BODY SHOP, 22061 Woodward, Ferndaie:: An idea so fundamental to Detroit we don't understand why it's never been used before: Feed your customers in cars. (Jim's Garage is too timid). Eat your steak in a Mercedes, conduct a tete a tete in a Gremlin — there's a vehicle for your every mood. In case you notice, the menu is limited but adequate. The type of place that Greg Landry would take a date.

UFAYETTE A AMERICAN CONEY ISUNDS, Corner of W. Lafayette A Michigan Avo., Detroit:: Search as you may you'll never find a better

Coney Island than the ones served up at Lafayette/American — a fact attested by everyone who knows, from Flo & Eddie to George Pierrot. Located right next door to each other, the competition is minimal because they are both owned by the same family. Be a Coney Island connoisseur — have a hot dog with. everything at once, then go next door for another. Wash them down with a coupla cold beers. Cheap, but oh so good.

THE UNDELL A.C., 1310Cass, Detroit:: The Tubes ate here,

Bruce Springsteen almost got drunk here — but check it out anyway..The burger-and-fries combination is worth trying if only so you can say you have. And you can watch local jocks make fools of themselves as only they know how. Doesn't happen every night, but they still talk about the night Alex Karras took on the Detroit police.

MITCH'S, 4000 Cass-Elizabeth Lake Rd., Pontiac:: Forget the decor, the food's the thing here. Succulent ribs, respectable spaghetti; you can stuff yourself silly here for very little money, and your stomach will thank you for it.

THE POISON APPLE, 38414 Ford Rd., Westland:: Serve-yourself "space fondue" in one of the area's uniquest environments.. .the food is good and plentiful, prices moderate to expensive.

ROCKY'S PIZZA, 10517 W. 7 MRe, Detroit:: Rocky's pizza is the most addictive substance known to man in . , a marinara base. Prices fair if not downright cheap.

THE VAUDEVILLE DELICATESSEN,

800 S. State Sf. and 1211S. University, Ann Arbor:: The menu is classic deli, and the food's good unless you're a hard-core NYC deli maniac (in which case, go home). Already an Ann Arbor institution.

A la carte of course, so prices can add up.

WHISTLE STOP COFFEE SHOP, 501S. Eton Rd., Birmingham:: Cuisine americaine: Simple, lovingly-cooked food served up in generous hunks. Highlights: the doughnuts, the cherry cobbler, the homemade bread.

After Dark

THE ARIZONA BAR, John Rand Arizona, Detroit:: A grass roots neighborhood saloon, cheap beer and a nice mixture of ethnics, hipsters, cyclists and just plain folks.

Try the Boomba and don't dress up .

COBB'S CORNER, Cast at Willis, Detroit :: A student bar, not the place to nurse a solitary lager, but there's lots of electronic toys and pool tables so you won't be bored. Occasionally, there's music. No cover.

CHANCES ARE, 516 E. Hefty, Ann Arbor:: The Chances exudes all the ambience of a slick collegetown disco, but look further and you'll see one of the best and most diverse selections of bands in the state. In a typical month they'll feature old faves like the Amboy Dukes and Radio King, as well as new groups like Lightnin'. If you can't dance or don't want to, try the balcony seats for optimal listening pleasure. Cover.

THE DELTA LADY, 22688 Woodward Ave. (block and a half south of 9 Mile), Femdale:: A break from the usual slag-rock bar—lively but not raucous. Groups are jazzy here or they don't last long. Cover.

THE MIDTOWN CAFE, 1395. Woodward, Birmingham:: As of this writing the paint's still drying and not one thirsty.patron has been served, but this latest arrival on newly-emerging night scene holds much promise if its owners carry on the tradition set down in their popular establishment, The Meating Place. (Orchard Lake). The Midtown will feature open-faced Danish sandwiches and a highly-coveted (in Birmingham) liquor license. Already declared the watering-place of CREEM staffers.
