1973 ROCK & POLL

Well, 1973's had it. Your ballots are in. You say you didn't like anything. What we're wondering is how come you had to send in nearly twice as many ballots as last year just to let us know that 1973 was not worth remembering. Like last year, you saw fit to voice your ambivalence: New York Dolls — Best New Group and Worst Group; Iggy Pop — Hero and Most Pathetic; Watergate — Drug and Rip-Off of the Year.

All of which means that you are a diversified crowd, and don't let nobody tell you no different.

Look what's happened since we first asked your opinion a year ago. The Rolling Stones couldn't make a best album, but their single tops the list in a year when there were a lot of heavy bullets on the charts. The lists for three top singles (including R & B) were longer than the list for the top three

albums, and one balloter even complaibed this year that because of the gas shortage, he couldn't listen to his car radio more often. (Guess he could have sat in his car wearing out the battery if he wanted, though.)

We made a couple of changes this year over last; we drew out of the running temporarily Punk of the Year, and dropped Best Festival altogether. (We figure by next year you oughta be ready for "Most Decadent Concert Hall" in place of that). But, in line with our own sentiments, we wanted your lists of the Most Pathetic and the Biggest Disappointment. And Hero of the Year, (that should have been Heroine too) because we sure need one. True to form, you threw the same apple at both targets. So here's what splattered, including some of your own comments. Thanks for sending them our way. TOP ALBUMS (3 choices)
