PAPER MOON (Paramount) — Yes, yes, Tatum ONeal outshines her dad. But thats not hard especially if youre the antithesis of Shirley Temple. As soon as she opens her sassy mouth 15 minues into Bogdonovichs latest nostalgic binge were captured. But Tatums talents arent limited to acting. In the movie, she out-cons Bible toting Ryan who is always his best as the worst. And the way she drags on her Lucky Strikes puts Cybil Shepard to shame.

SCARECROW (Warner Bros.) — Winner of the Cannes Film Festival, this is a middleclass rather than oddball Midnight Cowboy. Two wayfaring characters on their way to open Maxeys Car Wash in Philly visit Denver, Detroit bars and jail. A1 Pacino plays a scarecrow who gives soberhead Gene Hackman a sense of Humor and keeps us birds laughing. There are lots of incredible scenes like a psychotic baptism, homosexual encounter and a 20 layer strip tease by Max. Dont ignore this sleeper.

DAY OF THE JACKAL (Universal) -Since you know the outcome of DeGaulles attempted assasination the point to this thriller is how Europes finest Men-in-Blue find the OAS terrorists hired killer and how the hunted man moves. The way the Jackal performs his tasks with such routine ease is fascinating. He obliterates obstacles with the skilled impassion of a jackal, twisting necks as though he were wringing a towel dry, changing identities like clothes and designing equipment that make 007s gadgets hokum. However, this is not for action-packed addicts.
