Country Joe Cheers Up

PHOENIX — Country Joe has been fined $5000 for leading his “FUCK” Cheer here. The cheer has been de rigeur at C.J. concerts since the appearance of the Woodstock movie.

The performance occured at the Phoenix Coliseum, which has an “anti-obscenity” clause which prohibits “the uttering of obscenities or causing others to do so.” The clause was initiated after a Doors concert last year.

To further insure that there are no trips of the tongue or slips of the zipper, the arena tapes every concert and holds the tape as evidence. Coliseum manager Jim Jones said, “Five or six times he yelled, ‘What does it spell?’ and they roared out the answer. That was enough for me.”

The arena then withheld the five grand from the promoters who are expected to collect from Joe. But first they’re gonna take it into court where it will most likely be overturned.
