Burdon Curbs the Clap

LOS ANGELES — Eric Burdon, who records for MGM, whose president is Mike Curb, who recently began an anti-drug campaign by announcing that he was dropping eighteen “drug oriented” acts, has begun to evidence his social concern as well. Burdon is out to stamp out the “number one sickness in the world today — VD.”

Eric’s manager, Steve Gold, after saying that he thought Mike Curb’s campaign was “censorship”, explained the validity of the anti-clap drive: “It’s because Eric has the clap. He says from age 15 to 26 he only had it once, but since then it’s happened three or four times. For any donation sent to L.A. Free Clinic, Eric will send out a CURB THE CLAP bumper sticker... VD has more effect on the industry than any drug.

Curb meanwhile has still failed to mention the names of the legendary 18 acts that have been dropped. The company has however, recently released an album by the Grateful Dead, called Vintage Dead and it is well-known . what the Dead’s drug proclivities are. They’ve also just done a Best of the Velvet Underground set, which features the Velvet’s best known tune, “Heroin”. (Neither the Velvets or the Dead are now contracted to MGM, incidentally.)
