JOOLS & BRIAN

ICE ALEXANDER

In April of 1968, when I just took my copy of “Open” to ‘ABX and gave it to them to play, I was the nut who said “they’re really good and people are gonna like them”.

A year later (almost to the day) I sat in the deserted Grande Ballroom watching Brian Auger set up his equipment. Many times 1 have told people to go and see an English group; thinking that the group would be the same as when I last saw them nearly two years ago. Many t'imes have 1 been disappointed as I watched English bands go over really well after playing a set which would have got them booed off at home.

Brian Auger and his trinity accompanied by Julie Driscoll only disappointed me by their excessive volume on Saturday night. That’s almost the only bad comment I can make so I thought I’d get it over with.

Watching Brian loon around on the deserted stage brought back many memories. When he started (unaccompanied) I forgot them. As Folksinger Mike Cooney plays at the Raven Gallery. Greenfield Rd. 1 block north of 12 Mile, he played “Maleguena” in an incredible screaming rage I forgot everything. .

I knew that Friday would be a “getting used to the audience night” so I reserved my place for Saturday night. I loved it all except the high volume. I make no other reservations. Brian Auger is - bar none - the best organist I have ever seen/heard. His rythm section (Clive Thacker - drums/David Ambrose - bass) is very accomplished and superbly tight. And what do you say about Jools. One famous radio and ballroom personality was interviewing Brian and his first comment on Jools was that she was flat-chested. I’ve been watching and listening to Jools for years and I never noticed it. I always thought she was a singer!

I still do!

She’s the singer for that band. i Nobody else is that little bit insane combined with that superb timing.

The Brian Auger Trinity t accomplemented by Julie Driscoll is excellent. It is rare nowadays that I .can say “excellent” about a band.
