A Celebration Of Depeche Mode

...And then, of course, there’s Depeche Mode!

As you probably already know, Depeche Mode have been on MTV a lot recently—not to mention on the radio. But there’s a lot of people out there who might not know exactly who the band is.

Martin Gore? He’s the leader of the band. He writes the songs, sings them, and in his colorful, charismatic way, is the bandmember most people are keeping an eye on. But let’s not overlook the other members of the band—for they’re very talented indeed. The remaining three Depechers are an interesting trio: Alan Wilder, Andrew Fletcher and David Cahan. Together with singer Martin, they’ve got a very interesting history behind them.

“Wait a minute,” you’re probably saying right now. “Sure, it’s great we’ve now been introduced to the band, true. But who are they? And what about their records? Frankly, Mr. Hotsy-Totsy ROCKSHOTS, I’m not at all sure I’m totally familiar with this Depeche Mode band you’re hippin’ me to!”

Heck\ Guess you’re right! So let’s give you plain and simple facts, the kind of stuff you need to know in this disturbing age! Like, album names! Depeche Mode have put out a whole lot of albums! Their first was called Speak & Spell. Not only that—it featured the stellar keyboard talents of songwriter Vince Clarke, who would later go on to great fame and fortune with singer Alison Moyet in Yaz, and then, the Assembly and Erasure! Did you already know that or what? Vince soon split with the Mode, though—just in time for LP Number Two, dubbed A Broken Frame for artistic reasons, we’re certain! Next up? The incredibly fabulous Construction Time Again, an album so great they chose it to be their third! It had its fair share of hits, too!

There’s been a few more albums, too. But since Depeche Mode are on an English record label and put out lots of 45s and stuff, their American company, Sire Records, decided to celebrate the Mode’s greatness by putting out a bunch of compilation albums!

All you need to know is this: there’s a new Depeche Mode album out right now, and it’s called Black Celebration. ROCKSHOTS would like to tell you it’s a joyous, ecstatic reaffirmation of the grandeur of life itself, but instead, to be honest, we have to tell you it’s pretty darned depressing! But just as chock-full of hits as ever!

Depeche Mode: their name means “fast fashion” in French—but in English, you can just bet it means “smash rock hitmakers”!
