INNER CITY MUSIC SCHOOL

In an effort to stimulate the development of new talent among Detroits under privileged youth Rev. Timothy T. Hicks who manages the Rappa House, one of the nicest places in the city to hear blues and jazz after hours (see photo story), has set up The Development and Promotions Inc., a non-profit school and workshop in the Arts. Most of their programs have already begun to show fruit though much work is still needed to make it a truly successful experiment. What follows is the program of The Development and Promotions Inc. as they have written it up. Workshops such as this one can be important centers for people to ;learn and create in without being forced to compromise so please give this letter your fullest attention.

Through the poverty program much is being done for the underprivileged to help them improve their economic status and general living conditions. We feel that there is still another area of life which is just as important to become exposed to. However, there should be more money allotted for it. We are speaking of cultural enrichment, specifically music and drama.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT & PROMOTIONS, INC. has a musical program that opened September 20, 1968' for the reasons previously mentioned. The program has been. set up to service approximately 600 1 children between the ages of 6 and 18. Each child receives three hours a week of training in one of these arts of their choice. The music program has been quite^ effective and in its own way has helped to reduce the undesirable activities of many potential juvenile delinquents. We feel that this program wilPTnstead' create an interest, and will give the youngsters incentive toward educational and vocational goals.

We will begin our program with volunteer teachers. Through intensive training and extreme patience, these teachers will train the youngsters, who previously have had little or no knowledge of music or the other arts. After a period of time they will be able to perform on variety shows.

At this time we would like to make a concentrated effort to teach approximately 75 youngsters to play musical instruments with enough skill to form the Inner City Community Activities.

Anyone who wishes to volunteer their servies or interested in taking any ..classes, may enroll at the ‘Kappia Center’ on Tuesdayr and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 9:00.
